Default Jumping in for ... the transmission fluid

Try changing the transmission fluid.

I have been doing the 2 litre refill and it has resulted in a quieter engine among other things.

For a time I thought it was my transmission making the noise, but I've drained/filled it with Toyota T-IV 4 times in the past year, no difference.

If you have driven 1000 miles and it still starts its the (PS) power steering. If it was (ALT)alternator, the battery would be dead and the car would not start. Its most likely PS, as is a very common issue in these vehicles. Replace it/rebuild it, don't wait. The PS is just above the ALT and drips causing the ALT to short out. If you wait it will be both. Look in the stickies and Zero_one did a write up on how to rebuild the PS. GL

And you're absolutely positive it couldn't be the water pump?

Have you put a long screwdriver on all the pully bolts and the other end to your ear to determine exactly where the sound is coming from?? Usually fairly obvious which is loudest even if it travels.

when the noise increases on rpm i advice you to look at all the pulleys, just remove the belt by hand and check each pulley by hand.
check if there is any abnormal space or uneasy rolling.
also your belt will warm up when one of the pulleys is worn out.

so you should smell something plastic melting.

that is my experience on the iddler pulley and crank shaftpulley.

a tip from the guru's start the engine without the belt and listen to the iddle engine sound

it should sound clean and relaxed without the belt and you should digg into the pulleys.

I have a loud whine, transmission was "ruled out" by mechanic, PS fluid is full. But its pretty loud ish and goes away at 20 mph. Also when accelerating if I let go of the gas while its whining it stops. Alternator or ps pump?

Thing is, it does not do it when in park and reving engine, so perhaps tranny?

idle pulley......10 mins to take off the serpentine belt and the pulley. spin it while holding with two fingers....hear slightest grind or gravel feeling ... it is bad ..... compare to one at the auto parts store... you will see a difference. If this is the problem you should replace the serpentine belt too.
