Default Low idle RPM-sometimes?

Problem: Once in a while (maybe 1 out of every 4 times) my 1996 Ls 400 will drop it's rpms below 500. It happens at a stop usually after the car has been running for a little while. The car runs fine otherwise except from a clunking sound on the front end over bumps, but thats a different issue. My question is has anyone else experienced something similar to this? how should I go about fixing this? Or should I not even worry about it? Thanks!

try clean your throttle body, change your pcv valve, and clean the fuel injector and see if that solve your problem.

Seems to be common on 98-2000 not sure on 95-97 models.
None of those maintenance issues listed above are the root cause of the problem. It might get better after doing it but will not sure it .

Turning the lights (atleast the park lights ) or the A/C help increase the idle.
My throttle is clean as a whistle so is my manifold , as well i added a throttle body spacer , so i know the cables are positioned right . I also have been keeping my car in neutral at stops and it has made it much smoother lately as well as reducing the strain on the engine and electrical systems at a stop.

My 95 does it as well from time to time. It is infrequent and it just sounds as if the car will die although it never has. I too click the parking lights on and the idle raises slightly. Mine has done it for years. I run fuel additive every few months and everything is clean.

funny, mine does the same thing. IF the AC is on, no issues at all. If the AC is off, some times when i come to a stop, the idle will drop pretty low. I was going to see if there was some idle adjustment at the throttle cable.

The lowest mine's ever gone is about 550, never been close to dying.

My TB is clean, PCV brand new, fuel injectors cleaned with additives, not removed and cleaned.

.

mine also! I really think that my intake and injectors are fine considering i only have 45,000 miles on the car.

There has to be an adjustment somewhere you can make.

THat has happened to me a few times... Mine has dropped down near 0 rpms before. I freaked for a minute, but it didnt die. I turned the A/C on and it brought it up a significant amount. Pretty much if your sitting in the heat with no electronics or AC on...its prone to do it.

The idle up valve for the A/C and alternator load gets the revs to 800 from 500 . It may have to do with reprogramming the throttle position sensor.

i think the clunking sound which you mentioned is your A/C Compressor
