All LS400 owners with bad gas mileage READ THIS!
#91
Just buzzed through the thread, and from what i've read, it seems a lot of people with the 1LS aren't getting much out of this.
When I head up to the shop in a few hours, I'm gonna get going on this, on my 90 that averages <300 miles a tank (~250 when its <75% highway driving!!!), from all the rave reviews, I'm pretty excited!

no, i didnt change them as i was told you can unplug them altogether with no change and that itll still run right if the cats are hollowed out etc... i may try to find some extra cats to hollow out and install to see if it makes a difference. i doubt it will, but who knows.

I was getting "p0141" obd code and when I looked up the code, it stated that with this code you could expect poor gas mileage. After changing the one bad o2 sensor, I do noticed an increase in gas mileage. I would recommend that you have the back o2 sensors tested to make sure that they are running up to par if not, then it may best to change then as well. I went with DENSO 02 sensor Direct fit Manufacturer Number: 234-4603 (for 95 ls400).

I'm about ready to invest in changing these sensors out...
1 fill up ago, I averaged 13.9 MPG with 50 miles of highway (at 70 MPH)
EDIT...went 130-some miles on half a tank
And today I filled up averaging 17.8 MPG with 200 miles of highway (again at 70 MPH)
EDIT... went 346 miles on full tank
I never noticed my gas mileage being this bad. I drive extremely conservative throughout town to save gas. I'm one of those people who accelerate so slow they tick you off.
I'm thinking that maybe the winter blend of gasoline may be to affect? Does that sound like a logical guess or no?

Scaritto - don't accelerate so slow. You should try to get up to your cruising speed without wasting time. Your stoichiometric fuel control is much better at steady state throttle angles and constant engine speed. I've driven around with an oscilloscope attached to both O2 sensors and watched this work. You will get into overdrive and get your torque converter locking sooner.

He's saying there are 3 "coolant" sensors, 2 on the engine and 1 on the radiator, not 3 ECTs. (Engine Coolant Temp) It can't hurt to change your ECT, especially if your car is running rough. Running rich can also be your o2 sensors.
