Question Need a Decision on a 90 LS400 Purchase

Hello,

I am looking at purchasing a 1990 LS 400 with 279,000 miles. 2nd owner car. The second owner bought it at 92,000 miles. Runs really good. Does not use oil nor leak any oil. Tranny shifts smooth. Exterior looks good and interior looks good except for the seat. Leather has cracks, etc. Owner said he ran it on a 3000 mile trip a few weeks ago with no issues.

Would $2,000 be a good buy on this car? I have to make the decision by Friday. Let me know what you think.. Has new windshield and front brakes. I ran a history on the car and it checks out great.

Thank you for your reply in advance,
Allen

find out the maintenance records on it. i think 2g is a decent price but u can probably find one with lesser miles for a couple thousands more.

Sounds good mate.

The 1uz's are a great motor so if maintained properly 279,000 miles isnt anything.

Although that is a lot of miles on the suspension. Make sure to check all bushes.

But in saying that, the bushes in my Celsior are flogged out and its only got 150,000 km's (about 120,000 miles i think) So even the low kilometer examples can still have bad bushes as these cars are hard on bushes, especially if they are lowered with big wheels.

Just something for you to consider.

For what it's worth (maybe not much!), I sold my 1990 LS400 in 2003 for $4500 after driving it from new until about 183,500 miles. All service was up-to-date and the timing belt had just been replaced at 180K. It was a pretty basic model but it looked like new inside and out. I think the only "flaw" was that one of the radio button lights was out.

By the time an LS400 gets to high miles, its value is mainly dependent on its condition and whether it needs maintenance and repairs. It is pretty easy to exceed the purchase price of an older used LS400 in just one trip to a shop for maintenance and repairs. I spent over $4500 on maintenence and repairs on my 90 LS during my last two years of ownership and sold it to a coworker who is still driving it at about 265,000 miles.

I attached the "for sale" ad I used in 2003 so you can see what $4,500 would buy back then.
