Default Temp Gauge Issues.

Gday gents,

I did a search on the issue but could only find issues relating to fuel guage.

My celsior has always had a problem with the temp guage, It reads halfway when the car is dead cold and works its way up to just before the red when warmed up. The car is defetly not running as hot as it suggests. But I would still like to have this issue fixed.

My assumption is that it is due to bad capacitors in the dash cluster circuit board but wouldnt have a clue which ones.

Anyone ever had/seen this problem and know of a fix???

Cheers for any advice!

C142 is the cap, changed mine and worked perfectly. also changed C201, C205, and changed the C212 and my lights work.

haha, That definetly sounds like the information im after.

maybe I gave the impression that I know a little more about electronics then I really do.

When you say you changed C142 I assume that is a generic part number for capacitors?

will i get a wierd look if I go into my local electronics store and just ask for a C142 Capacitor, or should they know what im reffering to?

Do caps have polarity so to speak? (do they have to be soldered in one way only)

Can I just locate the bad cap by looking at the board and searching for a one that says C142 (or is there more then one?) I could probley find a picture of the ciruit and post it for yo to edit if it helps you plot exactly what i am to replace.

One more thing, you also mechened you replaced other caps. what problems where these to resolve? or did you do them while you had the soldering iron out?

Thanks heaps mate. I truly appreciate any help you can give me.

those cap number i gave you are on the instrument cluster and these helped with the lighting not going on when car started and the dead needles, but it still has dead needles on a cold start but starts working after 5 minutes.

C201 (25V, 470uF) - replaced by LXY 25V, 470uF
C205 (10V, 180uF) - replaced by LXY 10V, 180uF
C212 (16V, 10uF)

and i forgot what C142 was. but use this to disassemble the cluster, http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/elect...sassembly.html and i used this website, http://www.newark.com/ to replace all my caps.

heres a picture of the C212 that someone replaced using a monster cap

I think your needle is just not properly calibrated. Since it raises as the car warms up that tells me the caps are fine. All you need to do is pull the cluster (see tutorial on my site), then remove the smoked plastic cover piece. Take your finger and gently push the temp needle down to the cold position. Put everything back and you should be good to go.

Also, when replacing caps, the numbers will vary depending on if you have a 90-92 or 93-94.

You know that makes sence LexLS because the needle stay of half way even when the car is off.

I figured my caps were fines seeings and my lights and fuel guage are fine.

Thanks heaps for the idea im sure thats it.

I will attack it this morning, Let you know how I got.
