Hey guys have an issue

my 94 ls400 195k miles takes 1-2 seconds to i guess get into gear after i move the shift **** for example


From Park to Drive
and
From Drive to Reverse

Once i move the shiftknob into place theres a pause... then i feel a slight jerk or pushing feeling letting me know its time to hit the gas lol

I actually have to wait for the car until i can hit the gas and go. It seems to hesitate or stick.

I searched but im not sure of those issues are the same as mine, couldnt find an answer.
Also please excuse my lack of technical terms lol

I dont know when the last time any transmission work was done either as i got it used.

Well I would totally look into a transmission service. I think our transmissions are pretty resilient. I have 200K plus on my 1990 LS and I can tell you I was impressed what a TRANY FLUSH and service did. Take a look at your trany oil. Pull out the dipstick and analyze the color. If it's dark dark black with only a hint of red then you should benefit from a trany service. My sister let her trany go on her 1998 4runner so long that when I was driving on a long trip with her I had to pull over and check the trany oil cause it was acting funny and when I pulled out the dipstick not only was it low, it was black and it also actually smelled burnt! No bueno! We did a service on it and it made a huge difference, howevery you still may need some more work done if it's more serious then that.

i checked out the fluid and its a pretty dirty pink color.. almost copper+dull red looking.

I think i may look into servicing it

any other input is appreciated, ill actually try to take a pic of the fluid color

Use Toyota type 4 (T-4) fluid only...

I agree, if your going for a service don't let them shove what ever is cheapest in there! Ask for the good Toyota T-4 also I would recommend a transmission flush.

Get a trans flush from the local toyota dealer, it should cost about 150 but will exchange about 10 quarts during the process. A regular drain and fill will only replace 2 liters

ya ima make sure its the toyota fluid, im need to call around to the dealerships and specialty shops to check prices

Man, that would be sweet if a full flush and service fixes your issues! I hope it does, keep us posted.

I get my servicing stuff done at Toyota of Santa Maria because the closest Lexus dealer is about an hour south of me. Our Toyota dealer is really upscale and do really good work. They seem to be a little cheaper then Lexus but I don't get a loaner car!

Cool, I would try to have them look at it for free first, maybe they can tell you what it is first. Also does it shift strange when accelerating and going through the gears? Does it get better when your car is warmed up to operating temperature? Oh and make sure they do the full service like cpcc said.

when accelerating its fine. However when i stop and put it in park, then drive... it lunges forward a bit after a hesitation.

Same for when i need to go in reverse.

I put a bottle of Slick 50 transmission fluid in my 90 Mercedes 300e that had a simlar problem. It almost totally fixed the problem. First I noticed the fluid was low, so I added the Slick 50. Immediatly it fixed the hard shifting problem, and I was totally impressed.

In any case, I'm going to change the fluid and add another bottle of Slick 50 to the mix. It was a short term fix.
