Ls 400 1997 - Gold Exhaust Tips?
Okay. My dad has his beautiful LS 400 1997, Quartz Crystal Metallic/Taupe two-tone.
He wants gold exhaust tips.
His personal mechanic says, "No. You don't have moon shaped indentations on the lower part of your your bumper required for gold exhaust tips. IF I carved moon shaped indentations into your bumper to install them, the gold tips would get so hot that they would eventually melt your fiberglass bumper."
My dad has not taken the car to the dealer for an evaluation.
Anyone out there with gold tips on a 1997 LS400?
Are my dad and I on a snipe hunt?
Thank you for your time!

Maybe your Dad could have some of the gold chains he wears around his neck melted down and then have standard exhaust tips professionally plated. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Seriously, there really are a number of companies that will gold or silver plate just about anything. You might try checking the yellow pages or doing a Google search. I found this by doing a search: http://www.goldplating.com/
The plating process takes only a very tiny amount of metal for the plating process but gold is currently bumping $1,000 per ounce.

Lexus Test Driver
Yeah it shouldn't melt at all, I'd say only do it if the vehicle has the gold package. but even then gold exhaust tips would be tricky. Definately clean them everyday! haha and there are cutouts way underneath.
good luck!

Chrome It Is
My dad wouldn’t wear one gold chain around his neck. 22 years navy, E-8, proud of it. Sorry, I couldn’t resist that.
One expert said that the Lexus dealer could send out his current tips to be gold plated, but there you have the dealer’s cost + the dealer’s cost + the dealer’s markup…
The tips I bought on the internet at this cool website www.goldrushplating.com were $295. I returned them after my dad had the old tips replaced with the same tips in new condition.
Currently, there aren’t crescent shaped cutouts in his bumper. I took a visual poll outside of the local mall, and most cars have crescent cutouts for their exhaust pipes. Go figure.
I think the mechanic was out of his league, too, however, if dad were adamant about having the gold tips, he wouldn’t have let the mechanic do anything to his car at the time.
I think with the Crystal Quartz Metallic/Dark Taupe two tone color that the chrome exhaust pipes are just fine. I personally didn’t think that gold tips on the exhaust pipes would have added to the appearance of the car.
One website said that the “gold package” is defined as “badges and the radio antenna base,” which has nothing to do with the exhaust tips.
I gotta get some pics of dad's car. Wait till y'all see the engine.
Thank you for your input!
