PK, that's kinda what I saw here in previous posts and searching. These trannies seem to go 300k miles. What do you think about dropping the pan and cleaning the filter at 90k miles?

Thx for the response!

my 95 ls400 has 220k miles on it and all ive been doing is drain and fill. I still havent had my original tranny fail yet :knock on wood: and i drive pretty hard. gota let the v8 loose sometimes .
What would cause it to fail for completely flushing it? Maybe it wasn't done right? You have to keep the fluid level as you flush the system through. Lexls.com has a pretty good DIY about this.

I'll let PD explain what I pass over.

Since your tranny has had regular drain intervals, it is in all probability fine. Doing the partial drain of approximate 2 qts with new fluid is sufficient. Using this method, it is advised to drain each oil change or at most 15K. This works fine for the DIY as the cost is very economical. If you don't want the hassle, then having it flushed at your Toyota shop is fine. Dropping the pan and screen cleaning on a maintained tranny isn't necessary, a simple flush with Type IV fluid will do it.

you got most of it.

remember, theres a dif with a flush and a power-flush. power-flush is BAD (excess pressure possibly in the wrong direction is going to dislodge crap)

a flush, using the lines going to the trans cooling portion of the radtiator as input/output is my personal favorite. (search for method, basically you have the car on stands, in gear with the input to trans in fresh fluid and output into waste container, then run the motor in gear at low speed to push/pull the old fluid out and the new in.

Hey PD,
Is this the one you were talking about?

That would be it... You can also use this as a guide. They are pretty much the same thing but this one you can see how it is actually done

Great info! So on a 98 with 90k miles, with the tranny running great, that has had a drain-and-fill every 30 k should I do a flush, or drain-and-fill?

Always good info to have:

Percentage Old AT Fluid Remaining after a ATF Drain and Refill Process, and subsequent Drain and Refills
(1) 77.8%
(2) 60.5%
(3) 47.1%
(4) 36.6%
(5) 28.5%
(6) 22.1%
(7) 17.2%
(8) 13.4%
(9) 10.4%
(10) 8.1%

I personally have heard many stories that give what PD says much credit! I have heard a power flush is the worst thing. It does have a high probability of dislodging any gunk or debris that could have found a happy home somewhere in the tranny that is out of the way.

I have always just done a drain and refill on all of my rigs with great success. It's your choice, but the drain and refill is the easiest and cheapest, plus it's what has been done on your car in the past.

How did you come up with these numbers?

Numbers looks about right. Remember, drain and refill only takes 2 quarts. the remaining almost 7 quarts are on the lines and majority on the TC.

You should forget about those numbers and service it just like on the Honda Accord video or Lexls DIY..... 10 drain and refill are worth 20quarts of ATF. You can do a complete flush in about 10-12quarts.

has anyone used the seafoam for transmissions?

would it be more likely to loosen chunks of gunk (bad), or melt them away (good)?

I personally haven't and I don't think its a good idea either.... ATF already has its own disinfectant chemical on it. Just do a drain and refill on every oil change or perform the DIY service flush.

Default Transmission Fluid turned brown in 1 minute

Ok, this is weird, I just took my 1996 LS400 to get the transmission fluid replaced, they did a drain and refill. They told me the old oil was really bad, almost black so they ran some new oil to get the old out better. The guy showed me the new dipstick and the oil was red, I drove it down the street to my house and checked the oil and its now "Brown", what gives???

those guys are dumb. if they were smart they would know a majority of the fluid is also in the torque converter. so u mixed new with old fluid which is fine, but takes a cple drain and refills to get close to 100% new fluid.
