Default Question About Changing Camshaft Seals During 90,000 Mile Service

Hello All,

I'm having the 90,000 mile service done today on my '98 LS 400 at an independent Lexus shop I like and trust. The owner gave me a quote for the service and I was clear about what I wanted done.

When I arrived this morning, he told me he can't replace the two camshaft seals because he has to pull the camshaft to replace those seals in a VVT engine.

I'm thinking we'll, it would have been nice to tell me before I dropped my car off.

Anyway, does anybody know how much extra time it adds to replace these seals?

Thank you.

Eddie

Well in my experience when I was changing my timing belt/water pump, I purchased the cam shaft seals to replace them but when I looked at the work and the possible readjustment of the cams I would have to do, I shyed away. They seemed ok anyway. Who am I kidding, I got scared! Haha.
I dont think it is easy and would recquire extra time.

it's a few hours to remove cams and replace the seals, valve cover gaskets, and reset the timing. the vvt engine is more complicated than the pre 98's.

Thanks for the comments everyone. No leaking around these seals, so I did not bother having them done.

111,000 miles. I just had my timing belt, serpentine belt, pulleys and water pump done with an oil change for $500. I supplied the parts from lexuspartsworld.com. Got the timing belt service kit and the serpentine belt.

My mechanic didn't replace the seals either. He said it would taken more time to remove and replace. There was no leak anyways so they are fine. Now I'm left with the seals that I purchased with the kit.
