Default 1994 LS400.....bad ECU????

An issue I'm having is I can't retrieve any codes, it won't start out in 1st gear while in Drive, idles at no less than 1200 rpm, runs really rich, and has a bad misfire during which the CEL flickers in sync with the misfire. I've already checked all the ground points as well as all connectors. I'm strongly suspecting the ECU. Any thoughts???

Strange problems like that always point to the ECU. I would disconnect the battery, let it sit for 20mins, and reconnect again just to be sure.

So any pattern to the CEL? or just syncs with misfire?

Thanks for the input!! There's no pattern at all...only flickers with the misfire. I bought an ECU online from a salvage yard and should have it by Wed. I suppose it'll either cure it or rule it out. We'll see.

I replaced the ECU and all problems disappeared. On a related note, although I ordered a Federal emission ECU (89661-50142), they mistakenly sent me a California spec one (89661-50151). Well it plugs in and works fine with the exception of setting code 48 (air pump). I put a 1k resistor across the appropriate terminals to cure that and all is well.

$100 shipped. Not too bad. Found it on car-parts.com. No one here in Phoenix had one.

Also, did you install yourself? How difficult was it?

Yep, it runs great now. Did the install myself. It's bolted to the knee bolster just below the glove box. The hardest part is getting the inside of the glove box out. Overall not very difficult.
