Default Ticking Sound Accelarating While Cold

Have a CF2 with 100 k mi. When its cold it makes a noise..
Very exhaust- like tick. Almost nothing warm. Have checked manifold down to cats, back to mufflers, nothing. Sound seems to come from the back of manifold next to the firewall. could this be EGR pipe? If thats the problem, with 100 k mi. best to replace EGR valve, gaskets and pipe or does EGR last safely well beyond?

VERY possibly EGR pipe

I have the same "problem". Its kinda of annoying though, isnt it?

I've been told many times that this isnt affecting anything.. so I havent done anything with it so far. Maybe someone that knows more can let us know!

there suppose to be two egr pipes to the last time i remember. a upper one and a lower one. usually people have to replace the lower one since it leaks. i ask my lexus friend how much its gona cost. he just told me it labor intensive haha. so i havent done anythin about my egr pipe either. it doesnt affect anything. just for smog purposes but if you pass no worries. some people just do a egr deletion through lextreme

It sounds like your EGR pipe. You'll want to replace it because fumes can enter the cabin due to its location in relation to the cowl. Exhaust leaks post a safety issue more than anything else.

Thanks for the replies. I will definitely look into the EGR pipes. Weird, sounds like an old beater when its cold. Warm you don't hear it.

I'm also over 100k mi in a 97. I tend to agree with Pk & Sonyman. With my car its coming from behind the motor(external) at the back of the manifold. Pop the hood & start it up. You can tell if its exhaust-like tick or emanating from the head like a lifter. You might have to slowly rev it to hear where its at.

im not sure if it hinders your gas mileage haha maybe. i would tell you but i dont keep track of how far i drive on a full tank. i tend to drive on the fast side so my gas mileage is already hindered haha.

Probably not. Exhaust gasses are almost inert. The EGR system's primary function is to cool the combustion chamber to reduce detonation and reduce NOx emissions.

Haha yessss, I'll just explain to everyone how it's a "special complicated Lexus thing" that helps with mpg's. No one will argue cause no one understands Lexus! lol On second thought maybe I'll just save that tale for women and tuners! hahahahhaa

maybe i will ask my friend how much it cost to do egr pipe. last time i remember when he gave me the price. he said it was going to be 300 with parts. he always loves to give me discount on labor. i heard you can lose a very small amount of performance from the egr leak. but dang we got a v8 so who kares still got the torque there
