Smile Rims And Tires Questions

hay everyone i have a 91 ls400 and recently bought some used 17inch niche bella chrome wheels off a friend for 100 bucks he had them off his car for years now since he upgraded. but i wanna know best profile or tire to go with. i was thinking p225/45 or 50/r17. someone told me dont go 40 because i still want some comfort in the ride. i dont want that bubbly look but i like to low profile look but dont wanna leave too much room between wheel and car. let me know what you all think. i think 225 is good dont think i can go any wider let me know please thanks.

how wide are the wheels? a 225 looks a bit narrow for the rear of the car imo.
they are likely 7 to 8" wide. 7" limits you to about a 235 width, but withan 8 you can go to 255.
assuming 8" wheels, i'd go 255 40 17
with 7" wheels, 235 45 17.
in the off chance they are 7.5" wide, 245 40 17.
if you want to get rid of wheelwell gap, yo uhave to lower the car. putting larger wheels on doesn't do it because you have to compensate for the larger wheels with a thinnner sidewall tire for the same overall diameter as stock.

Motionbleu, welcome to CL. What part of Md are you from? You should come and check us out in the NELOC forum here on CL as well. Lots of members around the area, and we do carryout a number of events you may be interested in as well.

I also live in MD, so depending on what part you are from, you may want to consider the road conditions as well while considering profile. It wold be a good idea for you to post wheel offsets (if available) and width of the rim so that others here may be able to help you. My guess, with 17's you could probably run a 225/50/17 with no drop or a 235/45/17 with no drop. Do you plan on dropping?? If so how low. Keep in mind the rough conditions of our roads in Md. My car si dropped on H&R springs (1" drop) and I am running 235/40/18. Have little to no problems with the wheel, and it is still ideal for our roads.

get the lowest drop possible. usually for most people it's teh tanabe springs. they're on ebay for about $175 last time i checked. 235's will be fine.
i'd still like to know the width though. it's usually stamped on the back of one of the spokes. it'll say 17x7 or 17x8 somewhere along with ET "x". the ET is important took, otherwise known as offset.

i have had a ton ofebay hid kits and never had a probem even with the cheap chinese kits. any color temp looks good, but the brightest are 4300 to 6000k.

i have to go home and check out the offset on back of the rim, but the width is about 7.5 if i get 45zr17 tires. i may go with 50 though i will let u know on the offset 4 sure. well i live in pg county and have had the car for a while just started upgrading it though, looking at lowering it an inch all the way around. but if i dont have to i dont want to i just want that flush look depeding on cost also is it necessary to get new struts etc when u get new springs im new to this whole loving my car thing, i have been into it but just dont know what order to get things dont in. i have alarm, sound system, tints, know i want to work with exterior for a while wheels, lowering and something to give car a little more acceleration. let me know thanks alot !!

the 235's are obviously 10mm wider than the 225's but they are visually wider too, meaning you really notice the difference.
i would not use a 235 50 17, the sidewall will be way too big and it will look ridiculous.

go with 235 45 17 all the way around, that way you can rotate your tires for better longevity.

Is it even worth it to put those rims on? Those are such an old style and it would be better to get used stock rims and tires from a newer lexus for close to the same cost of 17" tires that you will have to buy for those rims you have. I mean this in a positive way.

it will look fine for what it is. they aren't wide, aggressive offset vip wheels. a 215 40 would leave him with about 6" of gap. that looks more hideous than a larger sidewall.
