Default Very bad gas mileage :(

Hi,

I'm getting 10 miles a gallon city and 15 miles a gallon highway. This with me very light on the pedal. This problem is taking all the fun out of having a LS400.

There are no warning lights (except the TRAC which comes on sometimes after 5 mins of driving).

38 psi tire pressure.

No smoke or strange sounds or vibrations.

No obvious vacume leaks.

Now I've heard of sticking calipers. How do i check for it?

Any other things I can check for? I cant afford taking my car to a mechanic right now. I have most tools.

Any and all suggestions are very very appreciated.... Thanks in advance

The usual supsects: tune-up- caps, rotors, wires, plugs, O2 sensors, throttle body cleaning. I suspect you have a first gen, and depending on miles, the engine may also be getting worn and tired.

i have 55k on my gs430..and have a thread on this too..

I get like 11mpg.

Possible culprits as RA40 said...

spark plugs, o2, maf sensor, air filter, decarb, fuel injector cleaning, pcv replacement, fuel filter....etc.

search on the gs section for 9.5mpg ... you'll see some more suggestions..

Thanks for the replies,

What i'm wondering is if there's any way to find out which of those parts is causing this. I really can't afford to replace all those parts and then find out my brakes were sticking or something else

Sure...

Lexus dealership!

1** for a diagnostic.

lol...I think that's the only way..

I'm considering it too..

But all the things I would be chaning I eventually have to change down the line wen im getting service done...so I'm extending the life either way...

Don't forgot a can of SeaFoam - Haha it is the cure all as some say. It is $5 at AutoZone and when added to a tank of gas it can't hurt.

So seafoam is 100% safe? I have a 2000 LS with high mileage and wanted to use it.

So you suggest seafoam in gastank? I already seafoam thru brake booster line once before. But its a different thing to add it in gastank? Ok i will try that. I really don't afford to throw parts at the car.

The last place it trust is a dealership. I rather ask here on CL and just buy tools to fix.

Jack the car up and inspect the calipers...if unknown, spin the wheel. Same with the back end. Calipers that do not retract, other symptoms like hot smelling brake pads, pulling, as well as a discolored rotor face show up.

Hi,

So I jacked the car up and the wheels turn ok. They are not completely free turning though. I can turn them by hand without much effort but if i let go they stop... Is that not normal? Would I have to take off the caliper housing to check the calipers? How?

I guess I need to buy a multimeter to check oxy sensors and MAF too??
