Is it possible to exchange a Panasonic radio for a Nakamichi of the same vintage without super-human effort in a '97 Gen II car? Would everything else have to changed also, like speakers, CD player, etc.? Would it be a "plug-and-play" operation, or would it be a genuine big deal? Would this
make any sense at all?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I assume you mean the Pioneer unit, not a Panasonic... I think I read in a thread here somewhere that after first gen cars, the wiring harness for the Nak vs the Pioneer was different and it was difficult to interchange the two units. Maybe someone else will chime in here and verify this.

You would need a new head unit, amplifier, and subwoofer. The wiring harnesses are the same. I'm not sure if you would need anything else.

yea, for 95-97 u have to change a lot of equipment to upgrade to the Nak system.

totally not worth it imho.
