Default LS400 Exhaust has room for a lot of improvement in HP

I put my car on a lift this morning for the 1st time and could see how much an aftermarket exhaust would be in terms of horsepower. There are 3 cats, 2 resonators and two mufflers. The way the 2 into 1 pipe joins, seems very restrictive as well as how they exit into the resonators. I think a quality exhaust would see 20hp gain.
Your thoughts?

I think you are right the stock setup is restrictive I guess to keep it quiet and efficient. I am not a mechanic but think with a good quality dual exhaust and hi flow mufflers you could see a 20HP increase. Hopefully somebody here has some dyno stats to be sure. I deleted the resonators and welded new pipe to the mufflers and couldn't tell you if I gained real HP by freeing it up. The muffler guy said it added power but who knows. It sounds better than before.

if you can't tell if you gained any real hp, you probably didn't.

Well--20 hp would probably be about the minimum on the LS to actually be able to feel a difference, not counting the psychological effect a louder exhaust plays on your mind on making you *think* you're faster.

Yeah I think you are on to something there - it sounds louder therefore it is faster. Somebody should dyno there LS before and after to put this issue to rest. Even if I gained no power at all it sounds nice.
