Default Autolite or Duralast Alternator

Which one of the two should I install on my 1990 Lexus ls400, both are about the same price?

The battery light on my car came on like 2 weeks ago and on Saturday all the lights started flickering one block from my house and I lost power, luckily I was on my driveway already. The car would not turn on so I recharged the battery and it worked, I drove 45 to work and back on the freeway and was fine.

The battery light, the coolant and low engine oil light all come on simultaneously, I went to Autozone to test the alternator, they put some machine on the battery and told me to rev it up to 2000 rmps and was told the alternator was not charing the battery.

I was told its dangerous to drive around like that because th car can stall on the freeway all of a sudden is this true?,and is it the Alternator?

Def. get OEM replacement (rebuilt is fine).

I would not waste my money on any other brand.

If all of the lights on the dash came on, and you had it tested and it came back dead... Do NOT drive the car unless you want to become stranded or worse.

Best of luck!

Yeah, ebay has good deals on alternators. I got a rebuilt 150 amp alternator off ebay for less than $120. I still have my stock alternators off my '91 and '92. Both work, I just replaced them so I could run a big system.

You can also re-build your original alternator w/o much effort. You need to get new brushes from the dealer, about $19, and you can get the ball bearings on the internet. I've rebuilt several of these alternators with no problem. Total cost is around $40 for the parts.

Mine needs a new regulator( but could be other parts as well) as it will not keep a full 14 volts unless cold and then started . Once it heat up it will hover around 13vdc when reved and drop to 12.6 when idling low.
Oddly enough when i reinstalled the alternator and the bolts are freshly tightened it preforms perfectly all the time . As well as being amazing enough for me to feel my heated seats quickly on my 98.

Don't forget that stereo's and AC all drain from that so if u measured at 13.1 u probably had some of those accesories on.
