Question 1990 LS400 Dash signals

For some reason when I accelerate a little red symbol pops up in the dash that says Brake on it with an exclamation point. I can't find what section discusses these things in my two volume repair manual.

In addition, my tailights and rear brake lights work fine but it displays my dash has an orange symbol of my car's tailights.

Also what does "L" do on the transmission?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

make sure e-brake is off and the brake fluid reservoir is filled up. if those dont help then u likely wore thru a brake pad.

"L" on the transmission stands for the low gear or first gear. standard on almost all auto transmission cars.

Did you check all 8 brake light bulbs (6 for the trunk and 2 for the 3rd/deck brake light) to see if they all light up when you step on the brakes? What about the reverse lights?

And if those aren't it, then you need to replace the brake fluid level sensor.

Hmm thanks for the advice.

Also sometimes when I'm driving, when I press brake pedal to brake, the [R] for Reverse will light up in my dash scaring the hell out of me.

It sounds like you have a broken wire in the driver's side trunk hinge -- very common on the gen 1 LS. Do a advanced search of the LS400 section on "hinge" to see how to fix.

Trunk hinge?

Also sometimes for some reason the [R] for Reverse pops up in my dash when I'm pressing the brake. It scares the hell out of me and it makes the car slow down unsmoothly.
