Default Hacked up my intake box yesterday...

...after weighing my options on going K&N or staying stock. I stayed with the stock paper filter because of the dirt issues, and I don't want an oiled air filter on my car (more throttle cleaning issues).

Technically, the stock air filter has more surface area than the K&N, rite?

Car sounds mean when you floor it, and the throttle response has improved exponentially. I can't believe Lexus/Toyota engineered such a restrictive intake in the first place.

I still have not decided on what to use to block off the intake from the engine bay.

Your throttle response really improved that much? I'm gonna have to do this. I was thinking about making a fiberglass heatshield. It shouldn't be too hard.. just take out the intake and use some cardboard to mold it, tape everything up, and it should come out sweet. Plus it would be easy to add foam on either sides of the fiberglass heat shield.

Ok, here are the pics, I keep forgetting I have to re-size them before posting.

I got my idea from jbrady's post:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-1st-and-2nd-gen-1990-2000/55111-hi-performance-ls400-mod-in-the-works.html, so props to him

Yes, the throttle response is very noticeable, and a big difference in power...but it also is more audible that normal.

One thing I don't like is that it is grabbing as much air as it can, doesn't necessarily mean the air is cool. But on the freeway last night, all ranges of response from low to high rpms was sweet.

That and the fact that I can buy a replacement box if I need it for smog for almost $16 from Pick A Part.

Pick A Part? What's that? I think I might buy one anyways, so I have it and can swap it whenever.

Yeah I feel you about the hot air. Thats why you need to make a heatshield. I think fiberglass should be possible.

If I can get one made that fits... I should be able to make many more very easily.

remove the headlight gasket to get some cooler air going into the intake.
pick a part=socal junkyard chain.

fiberglass wouldnt hold up too well, it tends to degrade under extreme heat. alum. sheeting is a better bet.

I like your cut out idea. I eliminated mine altogether and MPG actually went up. Now I am getting up to 27 average on a tank. I never put a heat shield on it - running it open. Not sure if adding an aluminum shield or removing the head light shroud would even make a quantitative difference......?

How you holding the filter in place? Got some pics?

The cutout idea is not mine, I picked it off one of JBrady's earlier posts...

It does give you increased MPG if you can keep the thing at 60 mph. On a straight stretch of road at 60mph I am getting 30mpg and my filter isn't exactly clean.

I do know that with this mod it makes me want to give it some extra gas because it just sounds so nice.

Yup. On mine getting great fuel economy now. I just wish I had that MPG feature in the cluster like the 2LS does. My brain hurts when I do math.
