Default 1991 ls 400 healight question

Is it possible to change a front headlight without changing the whole headlight assembly? If so where can you find replacement headlights?
Thanks for the help. Randy

Yes you can change the headlight without having to change the whole assembly. Your best resource is either gonna be Ebay or checking the classified section of this forum to see if someone is parting a car out and they may sell it to you.

90-94 models use the same mounting assembly but have a different lens pattern.

Guessing that you have a cracked headlight & need a replacement??

I actually think I may have one for you.

A deer took my backplate but left the head & fogs undamaged. Bought a 90-91 bracket w lights & need only to transfer my lights over.

Beam pattern is different post 92 (H4?).

I mean the actual headlight, not the bulb but that which contains the bulb.

It's possible. You'll need a headlight off a '90-'92 (9004 aka HB1).

Default Picture of the car that I need headlights for

I hope this helps, it's a 1991 celsior, to get it to pass BC inspection I need to replace the headlights as they have a different coverage pattern and "they" say it will blind oncoming cars.

Thanks Randy

im assuming u have a celsior imported from japan in which case it already has the best headlights available for the 1st gen. best bet is to aim the lights a tad lower.

never heard of someone having issues with the headlights when converting their celsiors to AUS/NZ specs but i guess its different for you

Shouldn't it be possible to re-aim the current lights that are on the car to fit with an LHD driving situation?...Or is it too far an aim for the screws that are on there?

Randy, I have to take back what I said in my previous post. Since you have a imported Celsior, you can't change out just the headlights because the whole headlight/fog assembly is one piece and not separate like US spec models.

As PureDrifter stated, all you can do is aim them a little lower. There is no left/right aim adjustment on the headlights.

Hi Randy,

I brought over a Celsior last summer and have already gone through figureing out the best solution for the headlight swap.

First off as you likely know, unfortunately you cannot adjust the headlamp to give a proper North American beam pattern, the tipup will always be to oncoming traffic rather than side of the road for sign illumination. You MUST swap the headlamps to pass the BC safety inspection.

The JDM headlight is a single piece with the foglamp so you will need to swap the entire headlamp/fog assembly (The North American unit has the headlamp and fog as seperate units). Second, your JDM will have wiring for H4 bulbs so buy headlamp assemblies from a 93-94 LS400 NOT 90-92 so you don't have to do any wiring changes (90-92 used crappy 9004 bulbs).

Depending on where you get your inspection done, if they are on the ball they may make you swap out the front corner lights as well (they dont have the reflector thus not DOT stamped). You will also have to add daytime running lights.

Feel free to PM me with any more questions regarding compliance mods.

Also please visit www.ivoac.ca and join the fight against the proposed change of the import law from 15yrs to 25yrs.

Randy, you should be easily able to swap your Japanese headlight with someone from USA. They are very rare and valuable, I'm sure a lot of people will be glad to give you their USA LS400 headlights + cash for your Japanese headlights. Post in the classified section of the forum, and good luck.

I don't think the beam pattern changed between 1990 and 1994 but the 93-94 LS400 headlight housing takes a slightly higher wattage 9003/H4 bulb. The 90-93 LS400 headlight used a 9004 bulb. A 90-92 LS400 can use the headlight housings from a 93-94 LS400 by changing the bulb sockets.

Thanks Kansas...so the 93-94 bulb uses a different socket....than the 9004 that my 91 has....everything else is the same? I appreciate your help...
