Default shocks for 91 ls 400

Whats the best budget shocks you could put on a 91 ls400. Not looking to break the bank just have a better ride and improve the car. Also,I could have sworn I saw a how to page but I guess now I can't find it. Is there on on this site.

KYB if you want a softer Lexus-like ride, and Tokico if you want a slightly sportier ride.

Actually, it's been claimed on this forum many times that the only way to reproduce the original Lexus-like ride is to get the original shocks (struts) from the dealer. The KYB aftermarkets are much stiffer than the dealer-supplied original equipment, even though they are also made by KYB.

The KYBs are probably the cheapest. They get as low as $250 for all four on ebay.

I've had mine on for a short while now and they seem fine. It is difficult to compare them to the OEM ones that had 150m on them. I only bought the car a few years ago, but it would be hard to compare it to a ride you experienced 15 years ago.

If you plan on keeping the car, I would suggest to spring for the OEMs but this car is getting long in the tooth and the KYBs should be plenty fine.

The KYB's are the closest thing to OEM with Tokico being the favored one for performance among many members (not all)

Ironically tokico was the OEM for my 90 Q45.

I am going with a tanabe spring/tokico shock setup myself. That supplemented by the front strut bar should pull together to be a nice handling ride. I already have new falken's on but hopefully I'll have some new rims in a little while.

If your ride is lowered then I would suggest getting the KYB's as they are stronger than the Tokicos'. My ride is lowered 1" with the H&R lowering springs, and I have blown 2 complete sets of the Tokico's in less than 6 months. Have been on the KYB's ever since (almost a year now), and no problems. Ironically, because I drive trucks across the country for a living, my car is primarily used on the weekends only and sits most of the time; so blowing 2 complete sets in this manner was unacceptable. So my suggestion,, lowered car--budget minded,, KYB's. If your car is gonna remain at stock height then Tokico's may be the way to go. I cant comment of the performance of these at stock.
