I need to replace the shocks, which are better and why?

Do a quick search and you'll see that many old timers here advise against Monroe - performance and quality do not compare with other manufacturers like Bilstein, KYB, Tokiko, etc.). I replaced mine with Bilstein and never even considered Monroe. I see them at tire shops and think they are better for Buicks and Oldsmobiles

If you want that factory OEM softness, the KYB GR-2 would be my choice. Lots of threads available though here and in the GS suspension section.

Good info. To add, the Bilstein HD's offer two spring level settings that let you lower the vehicle .5 to 1". The struts give you a stiffer rider that is close to OEM. You could use your same springs. Just my .02
