You will be replacing front & rear Struts.

Is this for a UCF10 or UCF20 chassis?

91 is a ucf10 chassis. You will be replacing shocks,, not struts as previously stated. I have a 92 myself and I had mine replaced around this time last year. You can use the factory Lexus one from the dealer, that are somewhere $70 apiece. If you go aftermarket, the KYB GR-2's are as close to direct replacement for the factory as you can get. These can be obtained from any autozone, pep boys, etc and they still run somewhere $75 apiece.

Default OEM part #'s for Struts UCF-10

Stay oem, in most cases you will be much happier.

UCF-10
Front: 48510-59017
Rear: 48530-59056

For what it is worth your Toyota/Lexus part printout will say strut assembly, but who am I to argue.
I have only been thru the process 4 times.

Hey damon,, wasnt trying to be confrontational; might seem like I was. Toyota/Lexus will overstate the parts on just about all of their automobiles just so they can make you think you need to spend more money to fix even the simpliest of things. In other words, Mister you got a big problem that sounds like alot of money. They way the springs sit in the whole assembly are very similar to struts, but when it comes down to it, especially for the budget minded it is shocks that he will be replacing. Didnt want you to think I was trying to be confrontational. I too have been through the process, 3 times just last year alone (long story).

Parts 11,13, and 14 make up the entire strut assambly. 11(shock),, 13 (top strut mount) ,, 14 (spring and strut housing)

No problem Trukn1, I always find your posts here very helpful.

90 LS has had tokicos & now back to oem at 228,000. This one in fact has had every suspension component replaced w new. Drives really nicely for a 17 year old car!
My 94 LS has replacement oems that now have 188,000 or so miles.
96 LS just passed 106,000 also with replaced struts.

Call them struts or shocks, whatever they are the #11 in the diagram. This is for the non-air suspension.

Lexus OEM struts have jumped dramatically in price over the past few months. They are discounted to $466 for fronts and rears at Park Place Lexus. KYB GR2s are around $300 to $400 on ebay and other parts stores. I just picked up all for shocks yesterday from a local ebay seller for $210. I am taking a chance as several members have mentioned that the GR2s are more firm than OEM. There several other costs to this repair. You'll need four shock mounts, #13 in the diagram. OEMs are $100 each. KYB ones are about $50 each. You'll need 2 rears and 2 fronts. You'll need 4 rubber boot/spring insulators, about $30 each. The rears are 2 piece, a boot and a spring pad. I am going to skip new bumpers, but those are $15 each.

Default Pricing

What the hell is going on with these price increases??

I paid much less than this from Sewell not much more than 1 year ago?? Why would an oem shock go up so much in price?

Granted I placed some huge parts orders but the prices I am hearing are ridiculous.

That UCA is now $414 discounted to $344 now.

I started researching replacing shocks a few months ago. I jotted down a price of $75 for an OEM shock from Park Place. Then it jumped to almost $100 and now it is $109.

As to the other thread about the cost of repairs, the same routine repairs that I do to my 1991 MBZ 300CE are always cheaper than the equivalent Lexus repair. For example, struts all around for the Mercedes, and this if for Bilsteins, was $542. The same repair in the Lexus with KYBs is $600.

Because they can. I'm so angry right now. I called my dealership for the Gauge cluster lens for my 93 ls40( i scratched it). 3 years ago it would've been about $25(i checked forum archives). now its...... get ready for this.... $169!!!!!!
Cupholders used to be about $100, now $180!!!!!!
$235 for a door handle!
$15 per denso plat spark plug.

With those kind of parts prices i might be better off in a new lexus. I guess thats what they want, to scare current owners into new.

why do you have to replace all that other stuff just for new struts. like mounts and all that. If its not damaged why should I replace it?

601,

That particular 90LS belongs to my Father & it has a totally new suspension front & rear. Something he would not do given todays apparent price inrease.

It has 228,000 miles & was going on its 3rd set of struts. As you would suspect its ride qualities are as new but we went to the extreme for a vehicle worth $3000-3500 or so.

My 94 LS has had one set of new oem struts, daizen sway bar bushings & front lower ball joints only at 178,000 miles & I love the ride on 18's.

Some items like the strut bars were not replaced but are quoted in the list above. It is not a wear part (no rubber or bushings) & if it is not bent then it should not have be replaced.

Shock mounts are a wear item, just like motor mounts, tranny mounts, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I hate shelling out the $$ also, but you don't want to do the repair all over again just to change the mounts. It is sort of a catch-22. Better to be ready with a $50 ebay part then be at the mercy of your dealer charging you $100 if you find you need it in the middle of your repair. Others have reused their mounts. My insulators/boots are torn and these are wear items also. These are rubber and the springs sit directly on them and most likely after 17 years on my car, they are shot.
