ok folks,
having gotten rid of the LS i was suffering from noticeable withdrawal symptoms. this caused an side-effect causing me to go blindly looking for a 'fix' regardless of costs.

What I was trying to say is you have two kinds of maintenance. Do you want to run an LS to death & put no money into it or do you want to retain close to factory specs for the life of the car?? You are likely to turn out all right if that is your plan.
My fathers plan is to run his 90 to death. The suspension is all new & better than my well mainted 94, but it came at a price. He could & would pay cash for a 2007 but is happy with his 90 with a all new suspension and 225,000 miles. He has nobody to impress but is amazed by the quality of the machine he has owned for 17 years.
He will change when the motor quits.

Damon, Your dad might want to reconsider. His LS may outlast him! 
I still havent heard of a 1uz-fe failing when its properly maintained. Although I'm starting to think that might be the truth with most cars. An LS is prbably so much more realible because most of its owners value it and take care of it? Maybe.

For anyone around Austin, I highly recommend Japanese Auto Tech, http://www.japaneseautotech.com/ ! I had them do some work on my 1st Gen LS400 and they did great work at a good price. I live in Dallas and usually use Davenports who have locations on Inwood and Plano Parkway. Super, also.
On my present 2nd Gen model, I've also found a great mechanic in Oakcliff, Matt's on Hampton. I get my OEMs off Ebay for a song compared to Lexus and he installs them at a great price. He's done AC, ball joints, engine mounts and dipstick grommet and everything has been perfect. Super mechanic and he's a genius on AC! Let me know if you have any questions!

I am right there with you... about to call it quits on my 1991 LS400 and it only has 224K miles. Small problems, but I cant afford it.
Steering rack or solenoid is bad... what, $500-600?
Motor mounts... about $350 (parts and labor)
Valve cover gaskets... about $200 parts and labor?
After that, it will be fine, but I cant afford this.

After having fought a losing battle for 5 years I had to concede defeat to an aging 1991 LS. I have to say I really tried hard to stick by this baby all the while fixing the major problems and overlooking the minor ones but the love affair finally came to an end 
. Sentimentally a part of me wants to say "it's not about the money" but let's face it - numbers do add up and there's a limit to what a man will do for a good stereo and silent comfortable ride.
