i'm gonna try cleaning my solenoid and see if that helps. seems from what I've read that could have a big part in it. I cleaned the screen in the reservoir and that took care of my noise, it was starving itself for fluid. Let me know what you come up with, but i'm assuming the kind of problem we're having is either a dirty or nonfunctional solenoid. There's a really good thread on cleaning and checking it somewhere buried in this forum lol

see also, lower control arm. Apparently they cause high speed instability when they fail, and you can't see that they've failed until you take them apart lol. Mine completely collapsed this past weekend. we'll see how much this affected the steering stability. its apparently a common thing with first gens.

95? check that rear suspension! LMAO my wife had a 96, all the damn track rods in the back had gone bad, car had like 1/2 inch of movement side to side on the back wheels. Those are also bad about steering rack bushings going bad. Seen a few junked for that and its a pretty easy fix.

Okay the solenoid on the steering gear or rack, is what varies the orifice that controls steering light or heavy feeling. The power steering ECU controls the solenoid, and it uses the speed sensor signal to do that.
It says there is a fail safe to not let the steering get to heavy if there is an electrical fault. More to come when I get more time.

Default Power Steering Moans

My power steering does more than whine. It Moans. LOUD! It's a 98 ls400. The fluid is bubbling up from under the resivoir cap. I had had to replace my alternator as a result. I've been told to replace the resivoir, but the people at my local autozone suggest the problem is I put the wrong power steering fluid in it. Now I have the right stuff and it's moaning louder than ever. The gentleman that flushed my resivoir says I need a new pump all together. Somebody give me some better news than this. please.

The screen in the bottom of your power steering reservoir is probably clogged. Mine did this too. suck out all the fl uid with a turkey baster, and then remove the reservoir, I used brake cleaner and compressed air, but i didn't have a small enough nozzle to get it all out, but it fixed my whine completely. Mine would puke all the fluid out if I made a hard quick turn because the pump couldn't supply what was being returned lol. Took me about an hour to fix. Hope this helps!

Oh, And I just used regular ATF 3 in mine. I thought i had fried my pump, but after I did this It doesn't make a peep at all anymore! I busted open a couple of bad hard drives and stuck the magnets on the outside of the reservoir, just to collect any metallic debris that are left in the system. I was in a hurry, so I didn't flush mine, but there's a really good tutorial on here on how to flush the system.
