Performance chip for LS400? What's the best first mod?
Are there any out there?
How much do they cost?

Looks generic to me?
Hopefully there's something better than that?
I would like to get a little more out of my LS because I would like to put in on par with the 98 engine. Anything out there that I could do in a moderately cheap way?

my buddy has one in his car and it gave him like 50+ hp 
just kidding.its crap.it will make you engine run richer.thus makeing the car run a bit better.but in the long run it can hurt your engine

The Apex'i works well, I've seen them installed on MB's to get more out of them. Seen about 14-17rwhp on average. Not bad, it just tricks the MAF freq. Simple device, you need a wideband O2 or a dyno with one to adjust properly.
Also, hack the air intake box. That will free up some topend HP (3200rpm on up). It'll also sound GREAT at full throttle.
Syn oil will free up a bit too.
