New rims- now the car shakes at high speeds.
Newbie question, but I recently put some 20 inch rims on my 2000 ls400 and now the car shakes a little at speeds abouve 55 MPH. I am taking it to a rims shop soon but i wanted to see if anyone knows why this may happen. The ride was totally smooth before the new rims, and I tightened/retightend the lugs to no avail. One thing I can think of is that i used upen end acorn lugs and the rims could have used flat end lugs with spacers instead. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
TIA

I have a 96 LS 400 with the same problem I tried the rings and everything. But nothing worked I was about to get my money back when someone told me to go to different tire shop who had a newer type rim machine and balanced the rims and tires no problem now she rides smooth as silk at any speed. The balance job was about $80 bucks but it fixed the problem and I just made the shop that sold me the rims pay for it.

Balance, balance, balance, that is the answer most tire balance machines are not precise enought for the front end of a LS.............Like GRAND_LS 4 said find a place with hunter 9700 balance machine , there is a new Hunter machine out now and it is even better.

More information - I have a 95 LS rolling on 18's. My balance problem was corrected with hub centric rings and new lug nuts. It can be frustrating since somebody tells you something new every time you take it in! In my city there are two machines to balance tires/wheels. The more expensive road force machine simulates the road against the tire ~ On the regular machine (no rolling force against the tire), all showed in spec (they were not - still shook). The tech put the tires/wheels on the road force and each were significantly out of spec - now it is smooth as glass.

The road force machine that simulates the road against the tire = Hunter GSP9700.
Sorry but the pros found that this Machine caused more problems than it cured. Ask the ones that know. The Hunter 9700 sucks.

Did anyone mention buy good quality wheels and not the packaged 20" wheel w/ tires for $899.
A friend works at a tire shop and he mentioned they have the hardest time balancing cheapo (not inexpensive, there is a difference) wheels compared to trusted quality controlled name brand rims.

Absolutely a great point. Most folks get burned with the front rims not clearing the calipers and then when they do find a cheaper wheel that fits they buy it and the rest is history (mine included). Next time I will opt for quality built (and looking) rims. I bought RUF Racing staggered offset - they look great however they were extremely difficult to balance
A list of rims that would clear the front caliper would be ideal - not sure if it exists or not.
