Default Need advice on engine rebuild/new engine for 1990 LS 400

Hey Guys,

I have a friend who recently took his lexus to a local shop by him and was quote for the following:

Head Gasket
Valve Seals
Valve Cover Gasket
Timing Belt
Tune Up
Cost: 5,000

He then took it to another "mechanic" and was quoted for the same, above work at 3,500.

He was also presented with the option of getting a new engine for 6,000 with labor at 1,250. This was an alternative route he is thinking about. What do you think about those prices?

is he being ripped off? and if so, does anyone know a reputable mechanic in the Northern New Jersey area who is inexpensive and good.

Thanks for any help.

Honestly, for $5000-$6000 you can purchase a used LS400 in great condition.

You can also buy used engines for $300-$500 and rebuild it yourself for under $2k. www.lextreme.com

That's what ive been telling him. Head gaskets and the cover and seals shouldnt cost more than 200, id think, based on other cars ive had and the current one i own. I think its ridiculous he's being charged over 2500 for labor?

UZ-FE engines are plentiful due to reliability. Have you searched ebay?

A 100,000 mile engine is worth less than $800.00 & should take could care of him if he does the same.

Obviously, between $5000 work and $6000 new engine, the new engine is a much better deal. Those works do not entail long block overhaul. Beside the head gasket, what are the problems with the engine that necessitate needed work?
