Default Battery Sleeve on 98 LS400- needed?

I recently changed my battery at Sears, and they didn't install the OEM battery sleeve. This is a rubber looking outer shell that seems to protect the rest of the engine from the battery (or vice versa).

The mechanic said that it really isn't necessary, and really fits over the Interstate batteries only.

Is this true? Are these sleeves not needed for Sears Diehard batteries or others makes?

Thanks for any information

As long as your battery is secured by a tie down (factory or otherwise) and it doesn't move around you'll be fine.
