Default Looking for a 2.5 gen 98-2000 LS400

I have finally decided to distance myself from MB altogether and I have decided to trade in my beloved W140 chassis S420 S-class. The car has been phenomenal, and has been relatively trouble free, but I am always scared out of my wits something is going to go down, and go down baaaaaaaaaad. I can fix most things on an LS, but not the MB.

I want to replace her with a gen 2.5 LS. What do you guys recommend I ought to look for in a 2.5, and what is about the right price.
I would like Nakamichi, navigation, memory seats, HID that's about it for upgrades over my 95 LS. Of course the big jump is the 5-sp and VVTi engine, heh heh heh. Thanks for your help.
GrandLS, please help

We'll, performance in the 98+ will not let you down, I can tell you that. I personally don’t recommend the Navi system, its very outdated, and not worth its trouble to find one equipped with it. If I were you, I would just look for one with the NAK system instead, unless you reaalllllllllly want that navi. (They don’t co-exists).

In addition, if your looking for a 98, make sure it has HID's, wooden steering wheel, and shiftnob. I’m not sure what else is different in the 98, that you wouldn’t have in the 95.

Because everything else is pretty much the same, or slightly revised and/or upgraded, but the concept is still the same.

Also, you will love the new key/remote, with window roll down feature. Btw, im surprised you don’t have memory seats, that means you also don’t have power seatbelt anchor. I thought this was standard on all LS’s since 1990, till a weeks ago when I saw a second Gen without one on eBay. Oh yeah, AUTO up and down on all windows/sunroof operation is the BEST feature ever. Also, if you're not planning on moving out of florida anytime soon, I would pass on heated seats as well.

Price wise, they can be found from $13-$20K depending on condition, and type of seller.

Ask, and you shall receive any help I can provide.

Grand LS -
wait, wait, my 95 has all options except air suspension. it has the Nakamichi, memory seats, and motorized seat belt. What I really want is the Gen 2.5 for its VVTi, 5-Speed, and HID upgrade.

I know the Gen 1 and Gen 2 engine and trannies are bulletproof. But the Gen 2.5 got a new engine and a new tranny. How do you rate these in terms of ruggedness, reliability and smoothness of operation?
The W140 has several engine and tranny issues after 150k miles, and hence the reason for the (dumping) err I mean distancing from Benz. The electricals and A/C issues make it a monster. But the car is as grand as grand can be. The LS handles, accelerates and feels more precise than any Benz, and I was talking about a 95. I am sure the gen 2.5 has to be superior.

The 98 Engine takes A LOT of abuse without ever questioning, or saying no. I've seen friends of mine abuse their 98+ tranny's to hell and back, yet it still kept going nice and smooth. I think the 98 would have LESS problems then the previous models, one being no more wires (coil on plug design). No stalling or ECU issues. The only problem I’ve noticed with the tranny is the way it jumps in first gear after I stop briefly at a stop sign.

ychachad, if you’re ever coming down my way (I live near the hard rock on I-4) I’d be glad to show the car, and you can check it out for yourself.
