a/c and bright lights
Wanted to get some help filling the A/C, few questions, does the car have to be on? does the a/c have to be on when filling the coolant/freon?
also wanted to switch out the headlights, to the new brighter ones (blue tint) available at walmart or pepboys. is it a good idea or is it even possible? i have a 1998 ls400.
bad gas mileage, to im dipping down ot 15-16 in the city, however im only putting in regular gas, and not premium. is this going to hurt the engine? should i go back to premium?

Welcome to Club Lexus
The newer ones/yours uses R134 refrigerant instead of the older freon. Since this is a closed system, if your A/C is not cooling properly, I'd take it in and have it checked for leaks.
As for lights check in the lighting section:

My suggestion; if you don't have HID, get HID's or leave it stock. Some like the Sylvania Silverstars though. Don't install the low-end blue tinted bulbs. It may appear nice but the general light pattern/illuminating properties of these bulbs is not sufficient to see properly. I observe far too many entry-level cars with these bulbs that can't even illuminate the road 15 feet in front of them.
Your gas mileage is common for city driving. And yes...use premium as the car states. You won't hurt it though in the end, you will spend the same amount of $$ or more at the pump because the car loses performance and mileage for each grade you go down. I tested this some years ago.
Best gas mileage on FWY
premium 28 MPG
mid 24MPG
regular 20-21 MPG

When you want to fill R134, be sure you have AC on FULL Blast. The car has to be on too. shake the can while you fill her up.

DO you want brighter headlights or bluer headlights,as they are opposites and only can get one or teh other.
Get HIR bulbs for $60 for maximum output with no extra wiring or ballasts.
For more blue get PIAA or silverstars but neither are an amazing improvment for the price.
The best is to get a gen 3 phillips ballsts with 9006 bulbs for less than $300 and it will outlast ,outshine and give you a blue or white tint with great visability.
