Default Seat Belts Hardly Lock! - Normal or...?

1991 Ls400

My front seatbelts hardly lock even if jerked very hard and quickly! Ironically I found this out when a friend and I were joking about 'what if' head on collision, and I jerked the belt only to find it did not lock.

I have no evidence of frontal accident damage - all the panels line up well. Seat belts are not showing the "replace" stickers at the bottom. The tension is good and they fit snug.

Sometimes they will lock if pulled extremely hard and fast, but not like on other cars I've had.

Is this normal or the perhaps just because they are old?

take it to the dealer, im not sure on lexus but acura will warrenty the seat locks for the life of the car, since its a saftey issue and the owner if seriously hurt in an injury due to seat belt failure could sue the manufacture... my buddy with a 92 jdm'd out intega got his done last year for free, his belt never locked anymore

worth a try at the dealership

Try slamming the breaks, and check if that does anything to the belts. There is a thread I read somewhere about an owner getting free belts from Lexus for this particular issue.

I am not sure about the specifics of the Lexus belts, but this is what I have learned from my Toyota Supra:

Inside the seat belt retractor, is a small ball-bearing which senses movement of the vehicle. Like GRAND_LS4 mentioned, when the vehicle is struck or the brakes heavily applied, the belts should lock properly.

That's correct. You don't have anything to worry about LEXkid because mine's exactly the same.
