Default Suspension Change

Hey all,

I plan on swapping my stock shocks with the Bilstein ones quite soon. I am wondering if I should do the front and rear bushings as well. My car is a 99 LS400 and I have 83k miles on it. Any suggestions. Can you please tell me all the different types of bushings that I am going to have to buy. Thanks,

Low milege and only 5 years old. I think the bushing is still good. It Lexus not a Hyundai.

OK my 98 has only 68k miles. I had some clunking noise in the back. The dealer thought it was the rear suspension and replaced everything, shock bushings all the peices. The ride was night and day. So much so that I am considering replacing my fronts. I have always replaced the shock on my cars at around 70k miles. Thats the normal expect life of a shock, sure they can go 120k miles but not ridding like new.

I reccomend sticking with OEM if you want that new car ride. Also many of you call the dealer "Stealerships", honestly that offends me and I am no dealer. I work for Motorola and work hard for my money. But JM Lexus has done nothing but spoil me rotten with service and Thousands of dollars worth of "Good Will" warrenty work. They covered 100% all the parts and labor for the suspension replacement.

Jason-

Just recalling your rubbing issues a bit back...the Bilsteins have two snap ring settings, if you select the lower mount, check that with you and passengers in the car, it does not cause rubbing in the fender well. The current ride height with myself and the Mrs, the tire is at equal height if maybe a 1/4" tucked. With suspension travel and cornering, this may be a concern if clearance with the spacer is limited.

As for the bushings, at this stage I suggest you do it. If you need it in 5K miles, you will need another alignment done and that is wasting $$. Do them both...the struts and strut bars. They can also check the lower ball joints.

OEM is good, but there are many sources for it. There are better dealership then others. Swell for example sells parts for LESS then HALF my local dealers price (on all the items I have checked so far). Why would I ever bother with my dealer, especially with the history I’ve had with them. You seem like your having a great experience with your dealer, and trust me, many will envy you, because not every Lexus dealer is a top notch dealer like they should/used to be. I’ve heard a lot of good things about JM, the last Lexus meet was there last weekend. Wish I could have made it.
