i have a '94 LS400 with these issues.....white smoke, exhaust leak near engine, kinda loud at times.....maybe the egr tube is the culprit! i did plug the ACV on the power steering pump which cut back the white smoke CONSIDERATELY, so i get some but not alot of white smoke on startup.....

White smoke has nothing to do with EGR. EGR recirculates the exhaust gasses to be burned again, to reduce pollution but you wouldn't be able to tell the difference visually.

actually if you read that thread, the OP never said it worked in the long run. i believe it will work initially but over time the heat will destroy the gas line which he retrofitted. it was never mean to withstand heat.

my EGR tube has the accordian flaps, as they all should!

Hitman, did you have a "check engine" light on before replacing the EGR pipe? Anyone else knows if check engine should be on when EGR pipe goes?

Bumping an old thread, but my 97 recently started leaking at 255k miles, from lower passenger side when cold, so I'm thinking EGR pipe. Yesterday, it now has a CEL due to either bank 1 or bank 2 that stays on even after resetting it. After it does the drive cycle, the CEL comes back on due to the leak. So this pipe has to get replaced soon before it wears out the O2 sensors or pass. cat. converter.

Man, I've owned this car less than 2 months and I've already had to do a Timing belt/WP Crank and cam seals, Lower ball joints, Valve cover gaskets, PS hose leak due to petrified hose and assorted vacuum hoses breaking due to being brittle, Plugs/Wires, and a new Y-pipe due to some previous damage i didn't see when i purchased it. Definitely drives and rides A LOT better than my 92 Accord I upgraded from so I suppose its worth it.

Yeah you should start a new thread on how not perfect "Old cars" can be, even a Lexus.
