Default How often should I change the oil?

I have recently purchased a 1993 LS400 with 132,000 miles. It runs perfectly and has been well maintained. How often should the oil be changed? The previous owner recommended every 5000 miles but I wonder if that might be a little high considering the mileage.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Personally I change mine at every 5,000 miles because I do more cruising on the highway than inner-city driving. It really depends...if you are in the city alot change it at 3,000 and always on the highway go for 4,000-5,000. I might start going every 3,000 miles, because it is so much better for your car.

Wink

Keep the 5,000 mile interval & consider switching to synthetic oil.....Amsoil & Mobil 1 are the most popular on this site.

Every 3750 miles or 6 months whatever comes first (schedule A), or every 7500 miles or 1 year (schedule B) is what the owners manual recommends. It depends on your driving conditions. Also, if you use synthetic you can go with longer intervals as others have said.

Just remember the filter is more important...

I run 5W30 M1 in mine and the Amsoil filters. The syn media (like M1s) filters a lot better than normal filters with a paper media. I change the filter every 5k and the crankcase at 10k. The car sees many, many freeway miles so oil temp is always up so water can't condense it in at that point.

Cool

Amsoil, M1 & K & N oil filters are the best available. I run Amsoil 5W 30 along with the Amsoil HD filters now myself.

Is this an opinion or is that a fact?

When compared to a standard media, they're a better filter. That combined with a bypass is only better...

Default more miles and amsoil

Lexus recommends changing your oil every 7500 miles on conventional oil. So listening to everyone on the "3000 miles" (which is a 30 year old habit that isn't nessarey anymore) would be dumb. Use Amsoil. They out performed Mobil1 in every way. They're slightly more expensive, but their 5w-30 grade is GUARANTEED for 25,000 miles or 1 year. I do this, and i change my own oil and my car runs great. I've used Mobil1 and it gets dirty after 8000 miles or so, but Amsoil stays clean all year long. Amsoil also lubricates better, let's remember their demonstration where they emptied the oil out of two engines, and the one with Mobil1 stopped running after just a few minutes and the Amsoil motor ran strong for hours.

Best thing to do is use a synthetic oil and change it every 3000 miles and use gas cleaners you will love the way the engine responds after a while. I am not commenting on a lexus but my own experience with many cars i have owned in the past. Using gas and injector cleaners dirties the oil but changing it not only keeps your engine clean it runs much better in my opinion.
