96 LS front brakes
Has anyone done the brakes on the front of a 96 LS? I've got the pads, but the removal of the old ones looks more complex than I anticipated. Any tutorials available for this model?Thanks in advance

Welcome to CL.
The front brakes as far as pad replacment is easy.
There is a retaining pin/clip on the backside of the caliper. Un-hook it from the pins and once you have that out, there two guide pins that position the pads. Slide those pins out and the brake pads are accessible. Pull them from the caliper and install in reverse order.
Unlike floating piston brakes, you don't have to unbolt this caliper.
Obviously, check thet the rotor is wihin spec for thickness and use new anti-squeal shims.

Mike, thanks for the help. After looking again I went ahead and changed them. It took a little longer because it was new territory for me. I won't hesitate the next time.

I just had my wheel off to check my brakes and noticed my retaining clip on the backside of the caliper (holding the two guide pins) is missing on my front left side of my 1996 LS400. Does anybody know if my car is safe to drive? Can the guide pins come out without this clip? Can the pads come out if the guide pins come out?! Does anybody know the part # for the retaining clip for the two guide pins? Thanks in advance!! :-)

OK, I got the correct clips to hold in my front brake pins. For reference (in case someone happens to be digging for this), the part number for the clips is: 04947-50083. Lexus calls this a brake "fitting kit" and include clips for both sides, along with a pair of new "anti-rattle springs" for about $8. Take Care! :-)

very simple job while the caliper is still on pry back the break pistons with a screw driver ( if removed you need a G clamp to push the pistons back ), if the clips are not fitted you will hear a clunk when applying the breaks but nothing to worry about best with the clips though
