Default Engine Warning light on

90 LS 400 127,600 Miles. Engine Warning lights came on. Engine compartment seem extremely hot, although the temperature was at midpoint on the temperature gauge. Can someone suggest probable cause and the proper steps to check it out before taking the car in for service.

Thanks

Try pulling the engine codes! Search for relevant threads if you don't know how.

Does the light stay on?
Is the car seem to be running bad? Any bad effect?

I have check engine light, but car runs real good, so for now, I am not worried about it. It's only "on" for only 20-20% of the time.
