Default Power Steering Leak...Help Pricing Parts!

Got a 90 LS400 and just overnight there is a puddle on the driveway right under the PS unit... iknow the PS pump/hose was replaced by the previous owner along with the PS rack during the earlier life of the car.I know it's a common problem with this year/model and the PS hose retails for 323.00 and the pump is 486.00..any ideas besides trying Ebay for a deal or getting a 20% discount off retail from one of the dealers mentioned on this board? Thanks to all!

I've heard that you can get a rebuilt PS pump at autozone for like $100 if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg for parts.

Oh, tommyk sent me this website about lexus OEM parts for alot cheaper than the dealer. I was checking out the PS pump for your car, and it goes for $215. xx I think. It's better than $486!!

The website is www.lexpartsonline.com

I hope this will help!!

Default thanks for the response!

According to the parts guy at a Lexus dealership that sells parts discounted online unless the PS pump is making squealing or other strange noises noises, then it shouild be OK (they sell a 30.00 kit that has 7 parts for the pump to fix leaking units) The PS pump and the rack (they also sell a 120.000 rack rebuild kit) were replaced 33K miles ago by a Lexus dealership..so i wouldn't think they were the cause of the leak. But there is no indication they replaced the PS hose (no part # on the invoice like the other parts used) Seems foolish that they would not swap that out at the same time but i guess if it wasn't leaking leave well enough alone? No diagnosis yet on the leak from my mechanic...will certainly post the info when i get it.Cheers!

Default Great info indeed!

Probably a bit beyond my feeble mechanical skills to attempt...but still a great find! Thanks!

You need to check for the source of the leak. If it's coming from the pump unit shaft, it's your pump. However, if it looks like it's coming from between the reservoir and the pump body, then it's just the o-ring seal for the reservoir insert into the pump body. The original o-ring is notorious for hardening prematurely. So, check that first. the o-ring size is a common metric size and should cost under a dollar at an auto parts store. A tip also on the high pressure hose unit from the pump to the steering rack: Have it rebuilt at a hydraulic hose service repair facility; it'll cost you about 1/4th the cost of a brand new OEM unit.

Default And the verdict is.......

Seems like the hose is leaking somewhere near the PS pump according to my mechanic. She (that's right an ASE certified female mechanic, somewhat unusual even in this day and age i imagine) refuses to pay 330.00 her cost for a new one from Lexus so she will have it rebuilt by a local hydraulic hose company (hopefully) she thinks with labor the total cost should run about 150.00.keeping my fingers crossed....i need to get another 235K miles out of this beast!

***kudos to the poster from Hawaii for his advice***
