Default my car is a gross polluter

well i went to get a smog check and it failed

like the CO (%) was 3.40 and a gross polluter is 2.05 and the max is .55

plus my check engine light was on so now i have to go down to lexus and get it fixed.. has anyone else had this problem and how much did it cost you to get it fixed... i have a 92 ls400

sounds like the 'cats' to me--not fuel related since that would be hydrocarbons.
The cat converter burn the CO and convert it to CO2 ,etc .
You said the CO was high--that should be it.

the HC (PPM) was high to 234

If you will do the diagnostics, usually CO is your o2 sensors (which you engine light will come on)
or EGR releated problem. Cats are usualy bad and will fail on HC and your engine light does not need to be on.
I just had that on my 92 ls400 in december.
U can try to decarbone your engine with RxP treatment. U can get it in Autozone.
Depends how much miles you have on the car, could be both.
Do the diagnostics as described either on WEB or in Service Manual.

yah when i punch the gas getting in the freeway i can smell like surfur( cat. )... i know i should not take it to the dealer becuase they are going to chager up the wazoo, but i only have a little over 78,000 miles and i have rarely takin it in to get serviced becuase it is such a good, plus it is paided off for too.... after 10 years of leasing it YES 10 just don't ask...
