Default Power steering pump - leak at hose

I have noticed that my 90 LS400 has a little seepage at the hose at the back of the pump. It has a aftermarket hose clamp there. The hose looks a little frayed at the end. Could this simply be the hose, or could I have the beginnings of the infamous power steering problem? Any information appreciated.

Make sure to check it out soon as you an because the power sterring pump leaks onto the alternator which is directly under it and will cause the alt to short out. It cost about $800 at the dealership for a new power sterring pump. It is the OEM part that is so expensive. But when you get it fixed the powersterring will be better than a new car. Or at least mine was...

I will. That sounds like it could become a serious problem. I guess if it leaked bad enough- it could cause a fire. I was searching E-Bay for "1990 Lexus" and there was a engine fire damaged LS400. The fire started at the power steering pump and it stated "power steering caught fire". Since you mentioned it- I guess the alternator had shorted out. It did not cause a lot of damage, but enough to be quite costly to repair.

Thanks again.

Yes, it was a design flaw for the 1st gen lexus. The PS pump is to close to the engine and they overheat causing them all to be replaced.
