Default How would you guys go about doing this?

Hey Guys,

Both of the bolts to my rear mufflers broke in half literally when I was unscrewing them. How do you guys think I can get these bolts (that are now stuck in there) out so that I can put other in their place?

Please don't say drill them out. lol I have tried using a sludgehammer and all also. Here are a few pictures:

Jason that type of bolt is normally retained with a spline, as the head is simply a flat surface. Support the flange around the head with a socket on a very hard surface, and drive the bolt into the socket with a punch and big hammer. It should come out fairly easily, and then you can buy two new ones and pull them in as they are tightened.

Jason,

Exhaust bolts after years of heating and cooling always seem to shear off like that. SRK gave you a good method to remove the bolts. Also spray on a lubricant, WD-40 or like before you punch it out. Failing that, if you can get them positioned under a drill press, you'll have the leverage to use a cobalt or carbide drill to drill them out.

When you replace them look for a stainless bolt, nut and washer in the approximate size.

I would drill them out if I were you.
Using a punch and a hammer to knock them out could result in bending the surface around the bolt. This may cause leakage and noise when you put it back together.
To make the drilling easier, use a center punch to make a starter for the drill in the center of each bolt.
Then use a small bit, followed by a larger one.
This is really not a big deal, especially, since you have no problem accessing the bolts.
Other than these two options, there is no other way to get them out… Unless you're a magician.

Well, thanks for the info. I ended up drilling them out like RICE said......wasn't too hard at all. Thanks!
