They change their standards every year it seems [this is across the board Can/Usa].

It used to be "x amount", now they look at the airbags if they go off PLUS the 'x amount'. You can also coax shops into high-balling repairs if you don't "want" the car after an accident, which is another reason many are written off, where in reality the extent of damage is much less.

Secondly, the prices of things now are silly. A headlamp assy for an RX450h? A cool 2500$ PER SIDE!, x2, and a few airbags and the damage is in the 10k range, on a 60k car, hence the writing off, once you factor in depreciation, etc. It's a complicated process that takes into account MANY factors.

Couldn't be any more wrong. You buy a car, it gets fixed, it passes state inspection, you're good.

Powertrain warranties are ALWAYS intact, you may lose 'corrosion' and such, but that's about it.

All my family drives is 'rebuilt' cars. My ES was one, my dad's RX is one, my current Subaru is one, and my mom's NEAR-new 2012 CT200h is one. Still obliges all warranty work due to age and all recalls. When it comes time to sell [by the time I'm done with a car], I lose max 1-2k compared to the comparable clean titled cars on the market. On my ES which I sold, I got OVER typical market value in my city due to the way I take care of my cars.

Who's making the smarter move at the end of the day?

The title of a car really is laughable since you can save over 10k [like me], on a car that is fixed to the same standard [or better], and retains [most] warranties that came with one bought 'clean' at a dealer.

Sorry OP, just thought I'd clarify for some curious minds.... and GLWS, this is a really, really nice car.
