Default Next Toyota Prius Will Have 9-Mile EV Capability

EV means Electric Vehicle

Toyota is working on plans for "plug-ins" for the battery from the grid at fuel stations, with future hybrids carrying a traditional power-point for domestic appliances to be used outside the home. Mr Abe said the next Prius model will be able to do a nine-mile commute to work without using any petrol or diesel.

That's cool. It'll be an electric car or a true hybrid depending on what you need/want. Move versatility means more customers. Go Toyota!

OMG first thread I look at on this board and I already found two intelligent members. THANK GOD! Bye Bye IS 300.net Happy to be here. This is the first I've heard of Toyota making this. My dad is doing patent work for EDrive; a company converting Prius' to Plug-In hybrids with a 25 mile all electric mode. I'm very happy that Toyota has recognized the market for them!

Yes, this has been done by some after-market conversions before. Theoretically it's gonna give us the best of both worlds, with the zero emission of EV and the option to travel over an extended distance when needed. BUT so far in reality an EV-HEV hybrid almost certainly means significantly larger battery packs and therefore a great loss of usable space.

Let's see if the hybrid gurus at Toyota can come up with an approach that solves all this. I definitely won't bet against them though.

But I hear those aftermarket EV conversions voided the warranty on the batteries at some point. Either way I think its great they are doing this and that aftermarket companies took advantage of this. Im sure those same companies(like the above mentioned EDrive) will be able to improve on this new system as well.

well, 9 miles will be achievable by regenerating energy as well. I am personally not interested in plugins at all.
9 miles is about 3x-4x more than what Prius can do right now.
