Default Headrest Monitor project: no visible wires

I wanted 7" monitors to fit in the factory headrests without changing their existing shape by widening them with additonal foam and re-upholstering. A good way to accomplish this is to mount a raw monitor from the inside, so that the frame doesn't protrude beyond the seams. Also, on a lot of cars where you see the headrests positioned all the way down against the seat top, it's to help hide the wiring. On GS models you have another option:

Default Headrest Monior Project:

The tubes in GS headrests are fortunately hollow, so it is just a matter of cutting into the tube with a dremel and running wire through. I did not have a shot where the hole was cut, but it was located just below the bend. I used a drill to get a hole started, then elongated the hole and smoothed the sharp edges with a Dremel.

Default Monitor Project

An aluminum frame was made and inserted underneath the leather. This would be the support for the monitor opening.

The leather cover was then slipped over the foam; the metal frame was aligned and then the leather was carefully cut open.

Default Heasdrest Monitor Project

Contact cement was applied to the leather and the bottom of the aluminum frame. The leather was then folded over the frame to form the monitor edges.

Default Headrest Monitor Project

This is how it looks for now. I'm still debating about fabricating a small metal trim around the edge of the monitor to give it a more finished look. I'll update if that ever happens.

Those who know me, know that my projects are never done. I guess that 's why I chose a Lexus, because of their "Passionate Pursuit of Perfection".

Stay Tuned

Thanks guys. The monitor is a raw monitor with no housing from Accele LCD7R, but the new model which is brighter is the "RR". You can also use monitors from Farenheit and just remove the frame and not use the mounting kit. You won't be able to use the mounting kit from the top without overlapping the edges, which is why I mounted from behind.

RMMGS4 does some seriously NICE work! I saw the installs in person (at the Carson meet) and they were VERY impressive. RMM, I can't wait to see your 8" monitor install...

GS300Rich, the quality on my LCD7R is OK for the price. The new model LCD7RR that Jawnthen uses for his nav is amazingly good. We went head to head with his monitor and my Pioneer 6.5 and the resolution is very close. I can refer anyone to my local rep if they want a deal on these units.

Manaray,
the 8" will come in time and you'll hear about it. A compliment from you is truly a compliment indeed. Thanks !

Retrodrive,
we probably missed each other because Jawnthen and I were waiting at your car !!

Why did you leave so early !!!

A small group of us NorCal folk will be back in LA in a couple of months to attend Rominl's wedding, so maybe we can have a mini-meet with some of the locals while we are down there.

Bluelex,
I can send you the install pics if you pm me with your e-mail add.

I had to spend about 3 hours at Image Dynamics. Those guys exchanged my subs and were tuning my system for like 3 hours. I wish I could hang around at the meet for longer but I just couldn't.
