bad speaker....any thoughts?
I have a 2005 GS430 with stock navigation and Mark Levinson.
My front door 6.5" component speaker is not performing well and I could use some advice.
When i isolate that speaker using the fader/balance it becomes very evident the sound is muted and there is no range. i took the door panel off and inspected it. it looks quite clean, i don't notice any tearing and i can press on it w/ my finger and get a normal 'spring' response. it just sounds terrible.
does this symptom ring a bell w/ anyone?
(my first reaction was to replace the fronts w/ aftermarkets but a quality 'plug n play' doesn't seem to exist and i definitely don't want to get into a headache w/ a local installer who doesn't understand my system (ie. 8 ohm speakers). my 2nd reaction is to order an oem replacement from ebay, but before doing so wanted some opinions.)

The ML amps are known to go bad due to inadequate cooling. If you've ever looked inside a ML amp, their components are quite low cost. You might want to test the subwoofer first. Disconnect the cable to the sub, hook up an ohm meter. If the meter reads infinite resistance, then the coil is gone. If it reads to within spec (4 ohm speaker, 3 to 5 ohm reading) then the speaker is good, amp is more than likely gone. I have yet to see one case where the wiring went bad in a ML system.
