The earlier units had lots of problems...many returns and burnt out coils - that's with the right amount of power from the feedback I've been getting. I know that Mean Gene doesn't like the L7's too much either.
The newer revised ones...no idea.

Newer L-7's
P's right about the first generation L-7's ( the adhesive Kicker used just didn't hold up ). The newer versions seem to have solved that problem - several friend's have multiple Solos in various types of enclosures & the only problems come from those which R underpowered. The L-7's will slam but they're inefficient ( as R most SPL woofers ) so don't spare the power! Kicker recommends something along the line of 750 wrms for the 12" Solos & we've easily run 1000 watts on a single 12" L7 ( JL Audio 1000/1 monoblock amp ) & also dual 10" L7's on a RF 1500.1. The problem seems to be when they're underpowered & the amp starts clipping which overheats the voice coils. Just heed Kicker's recommendations & know that the L7's will handle double the rms rating in a peak mode.

Anyone know if L7's tend to produce more max SPL than an equivalent-sized round speaker? I would think it is more install-quality dependent. So why L7's? There's plenty of other manuf's round speakers that pound and are reliable as well. Maybe you can fit a square speaker(s) in a particular install where you couldn't fit round one(s)? I'd be uncomfortable with the gimmick, unless they had measurable performance benefits.
Somebody clear me up on this, cause I just don't get it.

Surface Area
E - The only advantage I've seen over Kicker's other SPL woofers is exactly what U said. U can sometimes squeeze an extra woofer in the same sized enclosure ( assuming the airspace is correctly sized ), therefore U have more surface area. Not to mention the fact that a single L7 has more surface area than a standard similar sized sub. The build quality of the newer versions seem to be much improved - local kid around here has had 4 in his Jeep for over a year & they R still pounding!!
