Default Bad speaker?

1992 SC440 - original Nakamichi system.
Popping noise and slight electrical , burning smell coming from the rear deck. I removed the trunk trim but couldn't detect evidence of burning or heat, nor does the stereo sound any different, but after 19 years, I'm not sure what it should sound like.
Have I burned out a speaker? The fact that it's just above the gas tank makes me a bit nervous.
Thanks

Sounds like a burnt or shorted (shorting) voice coil of one of the speakers.
