Has anyone tried to copy and then burn a 2002 Lexus LS430 Navigation Update DVD?

Consumer DVD burners don't burn dual layer DVD's...the NAV DVD is dual-layer.

Pioneer have a new DVD writer that will do it. So they say. Model no. DVR 104.

For making your own, personal backup copy, of course.

Glad to hear that Pioneer is making a dual layer burner...I have a few DVD's I'd like to back up...I've actually ruined a couple of DVD's and had to rebuy them...that sucks.

well i dont think that the DVR104 does dual layer. i just bought that same drive last month. the only way you can copy a dual layer disc is by compressing the data so it can fit on a single layer. I really doubt there is a consumer dual layer writer out at this time. I don't think there would be a way to copy the dual navigational disc w/ single layer writer at this time in regards to navigation.

The Pioneer DVR-104 cannot write dual layer DVD's. It can write dual sided DVD's (as in flip them over manually to write the other side).

The question is.. does the Lex Nav DVD use enough data to fill both layers?

Nav DVD Backups Are Possible.

I also looked at "backing-up" the Nav DVDs. A family member recently bought a 03 GX470. I have a 02 SC430. While a straight back-up copy is not possible with a consumer grade DVD5 (<5GB) DVD-R of the OEM DVD9 (<9GB) pressed disc, it is possible to to essentially delete the points of interest of regions that are far away from you. I deleted 9 of the 11 regions and burned a working back-up copy of v2.1. I even tried it in my 02 SC430 with success!

As a side note, v1 is about 5.1GB. V2.1 is 8.3GB in total size. Most of the increase in size appears to be in the points of interest files.

The local dealership told me that a new version is due out approximately at the end of this summer.

P.S. The burner I used is a Pioneer A04. I can tell you for a fact that it burns only single layer DVD5 discs.

There is NO dual layer DVD burner, and you can't get dual layer disc as blank. Period.

Don't get confuse with the 9GB double sided disc, that is NOT Dual layers, single sided.

Ever seen a 18GB dual layer dual sided disk? now that is impressive.

No confusion here.

DVD5 -> Single Layer Disc, <5GB
DVD9 -> Dual Layer Disc, <9GB
DVD10 -> Double sided single layer disc (i.e., DVD5 x 2 = DVD10)
DVD18 -> Dual layer, double sided Disc, <18GB

The only part I wasn't 100% sure was the existence of a DVD9 burner. But the more I think about it, I don't think it exists, either at the consumer level or professional level.

Dual layer disc's aren't burned they are pressed (single layer, pressed or burned. dual layer only pressed)

Actually that isn't an unreasonable question. They probably run their own OS (or the one from Denso?), so the virus would have to be specifically written for that operating system, which is quite unlikely. It's why Macintoshes rarely get virii, there's just not enough of them out there for the virus writers to bother with.

That being said, I've been following a thread on one of the BMW boards. The 7-series owners are complaining because their fancy cars with every gadget and gizmo in the universe don't actually update for Daylight Savings Time automatically. And they're pissed.

They're saying the I-Drive software is based/licensed from Microsoft (that sure explains why it sucks a**), but that BMW didn't want to pay for the code that automatically switches to DST.

So if they're microsoft based, I'd think yeah, they COULD get a virus if someone started burning their own Nav DVDs!! (Of course it would still be unlikely, but the possibility is there).

Now what would the virus do? Maliciously take you to McDonalds when you punch in In-N-Out burger as a destination? Or maybe it would make it so that every time you start the car, the damned Nav voice comes back on whether you want it to or not! (Oh wait! Mine doest that now and I can't get it to stop!)
