Default Break-in

On sat. in NYC
some s.o.b broke into my car. They popped off my keyhole cover and must have jammed a screw driver into the keyhole. They actually were inside my car looking for the master key fortunately I had taken it out. When I called the dealer I was told this is very common as the alarm system does not go off when opened this way but the only way to actually steal the vehicle is with the key. I was quoted apprx $700- $800 to repair this as I will need a new lock mech and a new actuautor. Has anyone else heard this about the alarm? Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket alarm? And if anyone has had a similar unfortunate experience what did the repair cost?

Why would you keep the master key in the car? Sounds like you had some low tech thieves try to steal your car. You cant johnny a GS.

Default GS and break ins

1st sorry to hear about your break in. Second don't let the dealer lull you into a false sense of security with respect to the car not starting without the "master key"...if a thief wants your car he'll get it, plain and simple.

As far as alarms go, personally I don't think they do much other than make noise (mainly because so many are constantly going off who really pays attention anymore) Unless of course you are carrying (if you know what I mean) but I too have encountered theieves and they are not stupid and even if you are they will most likely have a lookout who will be carrying too. Not good.

You are probably better served with a stolen vehicle locator unit, like Lo-Jack, Compustar or Page Track2. Do a search and you'll find alot of commentary on compustar (more recent posts) and my own commentary on Page Track vs Lo-Jack. Be thankful they did not take your lock, because then they can cut a key, and all they'd need is to get back in and bypass the transponder to take the car with little effort. I know it sucks, but that's the way it is...If it were up to me car thievery would be punishable by dismemberment...yeah the 2 strike rule 1st time its one hand the next time you lose the other.
