Default Speaker level volume control

Here's a question for you guys. Is it possible to put in a speaker-level volume control? Specifically, I want to splice into the speaker wire to my subwoofer to lower the volume without adjusting the bass at the head unit.

If it can be done, is there a specific type of volume controller that I need to use?

It can be done although I wouldn't really advise it.

You would need a variable resistance potentiometer. And it would have to be one that would allow the resistance to be no lower than 4 ohms when turned to its lowest setting.
