I was told by Lexus this week that 8.1 is available, and the cost to update the software + the DVD was $375.

they go cheaper on the internet around 250.00. be sure to get the right 8.1 update(janurary 2008 ). a 2004 sc430 has a 3rd gen navigation computer so only buy an 8.1 update identifed as fitting 2nd/3rd gen lexus gps computers. the 4th gen sc430 nav computer started in 2005 up and there are no 5th gen sc430 computers so certainly dont buy one of those which is current for most newer 2007 up lexus. each generation of computer has a specific update disc and they are not interchangable. .................................................................................................................... the easist way to identify a photo of the disc is the large number on the disc face. the 2/3 gen disc has an 03 on it, the 4th gen disc will say u23 and the 5th gen u33. some toyotas have u40, u50 and u80 discs that fit gps made by eisen. all lexus computers are made by denso. so even though those discs may be 8.1 updates the only one that fits 2004 sc430 is 86241-33037 toyota part number found in very small numbers on the face of the disc. ......................................................................................................................................... the lexus dealer parts dept uses different number system id on the bubble pack it comes in just to make things confusing for the individual buying a disc on the internet. they dont evenn know anything about the part number or large id number on the disc face. they only know the id number on the bubble pack. so to save from the dealer price of 375.00 down to 250.00 for the 8.1 update off the internet your going to have to understand all the different 8.1 discs genrations and buy the right one.

I thought, all you need is a dvd of 8.1 that is it. Are you suggesting that there is more to it?

Default I just ordered the newest update (08.1) for $199.99 net (plus $7.40 shipping)

I just ordered the the 08.1 update from Sewell Lexus parts online, and they currently have a great price. Use the promo code on their website for an immediate $50 discount and if you send them your former DVD they send a $50 rebate. So the net for me is $199.99 after rebate.

I'll post my view of the updates after using it for a few weeks.

Mick

I have a GEN 4 2004 ES330. Is this update just the new map or including systerm update too? Seems pricy for just the new map update. Isn't Lexus/Toyota using NAVTEQ map?

to cb6 question here is answer. 2005 sc430 uses generation 4 maps. you will loose your abilty to acsess the overide screen if you update from your 2005 model year map to anything newer. no one has come up with a good 5.1/ 8.1 map yet. that would give the ability to acsess the 5.1 overide screen and the latest 8.1 maps and poi's.

the dealer updates the nav map which is located in a hard drive computer located behind the screen. he uses his tis techsteam and a navigation update tool. cost probably the same as the dvd map but no copies can be made like the dvd maps. this is a return to dvd hard drives as the 98 to 2000 ls400 had hard drive. but that could only be upgraded by denso. i am sure the dealers will charge a service fee for instalation . so price probably will be more than 300.00 the cost of a dealer bought original map update.

Hi,
I just got a postcard from my dealer in Orlando and their price is $265 plus labor. How can there be any labor, since it's only a CD.

Some older model has a hard drive that may take a little bit work and some of the DVD is located in the trunk not behind the dash screen. My guess is dealer has a flat charge just like any other service work to upgrade system.
